Yikes! Is this ugly!

Poor Spud, the hedgehog, lost his spines!

Spud was found wandering in a garden and taken to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital in Aylesbury, Bucks, last August. Experts are baffled by his condition, which has caused his skin to dry and his spines to fall out. The hospital is asking practitioners of alternative medicine to suggest possible remedies.

The bald animal was christened Spud by hospital staff because, when curled up into a ball, he resembles a potato.

Rare blond hedgehog

Dr Andrew Kelly, manager of RSPCA in Cheshire, said: "We receive around 600 hedgehogs a year at Stapeley Grange, often orphaned juveniles, but we've never had a blonde hedgehog before."

This baby hedgehog, believed to be just a few months old, it was found weak and struggling by a member of the public in Gobowen, Shropshire.

Couldn't find any rocks

A New Zealand man could face five years in prison if convicted after being accused of using a hedgehog as a weapon.

According to police, the man threw the hedgehog to hit a 15-year-old boy last month. Police say the hedgehog "hit the victim in the leg, causing a large red welt and several puncture marks."

It's not known if the hedgehog was dead or alive when it was thrown, but it was dead when police collected it as evidence.

I disagree

Robert at Environmental Graffiti is way off base! He has selected five totally cute, harmless and totally lovable baby animals and has accused them of being ugly.

Ugly?

Shar-Pei Puppies?

Look at those floppy little folded ears. Look at that smooshed little nose, those stubby little paws, those squinty, sad little eyes. Look at those soft, puffy wrinkles. Who in their right mind would call this ugly? Even Robert wouldn't sink this low.

Ugly?

A baby sloth?

So what's not to love with this little guy? Smooth, blond hair - sweet little eyes, fuzzy little curled feet. A cute button nose. Totally adorable!

Ugly?

Baby Pandas?

This I don't even have to defend, do I? Everybody in the universe knows that pandas are the most irresistibly adorable creatures ever created. What a travesty to even think "panda" and "ugly" on the same day.

Ugly?

Naked Mole Rats?

Oh, naked mole rats, these poor little things. Always maligned, always made fun of, always pointed to as a perfect example of ugliness. Don't they look scrumptious? A little tomato sauce, and lunch is served.

Ugly?

Robin chicks?

Robert says baby robins are gross and disgusting. That's because Robert has never observed a robin's nest and taken a photo each day and waited eagerly for those beautiful little blue eggs to hatch. I have.

Ugly?

Baby hedgehogs?

I love the translucent teensy nails. The pink wrinkly skin looks so soft and silky but then juxtapose those dangerous looking quills. Here's the thing: baby hedgehogs are dangerously cute!

Cute Baby Hedgehog

Insanely cute!
There's a whole series of photos of newborn hedgehogs at Dark Roasted Blend.

Hurt hedgehogs

Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire is looking after hundreds of abandoned hedgehogs born during the exceptionally mild autumn and who are too small or weak to hibernate.

They need to heal and gain weight before they can hibernate.

Horny Hedgehogs Spark Police Callout

Two hedgehogs triggered a nocturnal police operation in Germany this week after the spiky little mammals awoke neighbors with their loud, shameless mating. They went on fornicating even as a crowd gathered to watch them. In fact the attention made them even more vigorous.

"The hedgehogs were loud and uninhibited in their actions last night. Neither the owners of the house nor the police officers called to the scene were able to put a stop to their passionate fornication," Bremen police said in a statement.

Baby hedgehogs rescued after they are born too early

Britain's mild spring weather has caused females hedgehogs to come out of hibernation and give birth around a month early.

This means that animal rescue centres are dealing with the inevitable orphaned offspring weeks earlier than expected.

The amazing albino hedgehog

This ghostly figure in the undergrowth is actually a rare albino hedgehog. The tiny animal is being cared for by Melanie James at the Bank Mill Nursery and Nature Reserve in Cumbria.

Ms James, 31, said she was completely taken aback when her two African pygmy hedgehogs produced an albino baby.

"I was totally surprised when he was born. Only one in ten thousand hedgehogs are born totally white with red eyes," she said.

150 hedgehogs in my bedroom

ANIMAL lover Barbara Roberts has saved 150 hedgehogs from starvation - by putting them all up in her spare bedroom.

Volunteers at the Withington Hedgehog Hospital had run out of space for the creatures after the mild winter tricked hundreds of them into coming out of hibernation early.

Miss Roberts, 55, who runs the hospital, offered to take some home - and now has 150 animals in pet containers piled 12-high, filling her 10x8 ft spare room from floor to ceiling.

She also has nine younger hedgehogs housed in three incubators, several older ones in pens in the garden, and 23 waifs and strays living in the lounge of her house in Parsonage Road, Withington.

"I really can't see a problem with it," said Miss Roberts. "When people come round they can't believe it doesn't smell.
