MASON, Ohio -- Police say an Ohio man has been charged with a misdemeanor for barking at a police dog.
A police report says 25-year-old Ryan James Stephens was charged with teasing a police dog in the Cincinnati suburb of Mason.
Officer Bradley Walker wrote that he heard the K9 dog barking uncontrollably inside his patrol car while he was investigating a car crash at a pub early Sunday morning. Walker says Stephens was making barking noises and hissing at the animal.
Walker reported that Stephens said "the dog started it" when asked why he was harassing the animal. The officer said Stephens appeared highly intoxicated.

PETA offers unusual prize to contest winner
The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has long advocated for dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered. Now, it's extending the campaign to humans.
The Norfolk, Va.-based group is offering a free vasectomy to the winner of its "Why should PETA neuter you?" campaign. Applicants enter the contest by getting their cat or dog spayed or neutered and submitting an essay to PETA.
The group says human overpopulation contributes to animal suffering by draining water and land resources and causing pollution.
The contest runs through April 27.

Woman on boat in Florida Keys hit by Eagle Ray
The woman, Jenny Hausch, was on the chartered boat Friday with her husband and three children, taking pictures of a group of eagle rays as they flew out of the water.
"One of the rays jumped in the air and she gets this perfect shot," the captain said, adding that rays always jump twice.
On the second jump, one ray hit her in the chest and she fell down, hitting her head.
"It keeps slamming and slamming on top of her, trying to swim away," the captain said.
Hausch's husband and children watched in horror.
Two Florida Fish and Wildlife officers who happened to be on a nearby boat heard the screaming and came to help pull the ray off of Hausch. Everyone thought that Hausch was dead, but when she was freed she didn't have a scratch on her.

Euuwww! Dog eats owner's toes
A diabetic Oregon man with no feeling in his feet woke up to find his dog had eaten part of his right foot, including three toes.
The Roseburg News-Review reports that the 61-year-old man, whose name was not disclosed by police, was in serious condition after calling 911 at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday.
The man told emergency responders that he fell asleep on his couch and woke up to find pieces of his foot missing.
Roseburg veterinarian Alan Ross says that the dog may have been trying to rid his owner of dead tissue, and says he may have been attracted to the foot if it were infected or gangrenous.

Stray dog jumps in family's fridge
A Yuma Fire Department spokesman says the family told firefighters the pooch rushed into their home when they opened the front door and kept snapping at them.
When they went to the fridge to get some food to try to lure the dog outside, the animal jumped in the appliance and refused to come out.
Firefighters found the small black terrier-type dog crouched on the bottom shelf, snapping at anyone who approached.

Pizzeria Owner Leaves Mice At Rival Shops
Upper Darby police said a man walked into Verona Pizza on Monday afternoon and asked to use the bathroom. After he left, the owner said he found footprints on the toilet and noticed that the drop ceiling had been disturbed, and he found a bag tucked up above.
The owner turned the bag over to two police officers who happened to be eating lunch there, and they found three white mice inside, police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said.
Police say the man then walked across the street to Uncle Nick's Pizza and dumped another bag into a trash can inside the establishment, and police found five live mice and one dead one inside.

Going to the Dogs
For more than 20 years, candidates running for office in the Hillbrook-Tall Oaks Civic Association in Annandale, WA, have stood, waved and received polite applause at the annual meeting in June. Everyone votes, eats ice cream, chats with neighbors and goes home.
This past election, to make the meeting move faster, only the names and qualifications of the candidates were announced. Running for president, Ms. Beatha Lee was described as a relatively new resident, interested in neighborhood activities and the outdoors, and who had experience in Maine overseeing an estate of 26 acres.
Though unfamiliar with Lee's name, the crowd of about 50 raised their hands, assuming that the candidate was a civic-minded newcomer. These days, it's hard to get anyone to volunteer to devote the time needed to serve as an officer. The slate that Lee headed was unanimously elected. Everyone ate ice cream, watched a karate demonstration and went home.

Only weeks later did many discover that their new president was, in fact, a dog.

Bangkok authorities bust animal smuggler
Bangkok authorities have busted a man who attempted to board a plane carrying enough creatures to start a small zoo.
The Indonesian smuggler's three suitcases contained:
2 boa constrictors
34 ball pythons
26 lizards of assorted kinds
6 Argentine horned frogs
18 baboon spiders
22 squirrels
a parrot
and close to 150 tortoises of various species
Many of the creatures in the man's suitcase menagerie were from rare and endangered species, including a plowshare tortoise, of which fewer than a thousand exist. Traffic says the man bought all the animals at Bangkok's Chatuchak market, a notorious hub for trading in rare animals.

Stray cats take over KY town
TAYLORSVILLE, KY - People in Taylorsville say they are fed up with unwanted stray cats, but it seems they have no choice for now but to welcome the group. Meanwhile, the mayor says the city is doing everything they can to control the problem.
There are cats running around downtown, at gas stations, and even roaming around people's homes - and cars.
"They're all over the cars," one resident said. "You go up there and look at the cat crap on the hood and stuff."
Mayor Pay says the cats have been a growing problem for several years, but thinks they're making progress in tackling it. Pay says they've spayed and neutered at least 100 cats and still have about 200-300 to go. He believes those efforts will eventually help lower the stray cat population.

What? You can't mail puppies?
A Minneapolis woman is being charged with animal cruelty after police say she tried to send a puppy through the mail without food or water. The poodle-mix pup was discovered after its movements knocked the two-day priority Post Office box off a counter. The puppy is now doing fine. It will go up for adoption if officials turn down the owner’s appeal to get it back.

Can't sew them back on
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — A valuable pedigreed cat that went missing from its New Zealand home turned up two days later a little different — it had been surgically castrated.
Owner Michelle Curtis said she was furious when Buddy, her prized Siamese-Bengal cross, came home "fixed."
Curtis had owned Buddy for almost two years and was considering using him as a stud cat.
"What am I supposed to do now? I can't exactly get someone to sew them back on," she said.

Phone keeps ringing in croc's tummy
Aquarium workers initially didn't believe Rimma Golovko, a new mother in her 20s, when she complained that the crocodile had swallowed her phone.
“But then the phone started ringing and the sound was coming from inside our Gena's stomach and we understood she wasn't lying,” said Alexandra, an employee.
The mishap has caused problems for the crocodile, which has not eaten or had a bowel movement in four weeks and appears depressed and in pain.
"The animal is not feeling well," said Alexandra. "His behavior has changed, he moves very little and swims much less than he used to."

Yeah, I tried to get out of jury duty, too
The problem arose after owners Anna and Guy Esposito listed him on the last U.S. Census under "pet."
Anna filed for his disqualification of service. He was not "too old," "ill," or a "convicted felon," so she filed that he "cannot speak English."
The jury commissioner denied this request.
