CANIDAE Helps Freekibble.com Feed Shelter Dogs and Cats

By Julia Williams

The sponser of this blog, CANIDAE® All Natural Pet Foods, has been making donations to freekibble.com, a charity dedicated to providing high quality food to shelter dogs and cats from Oregon to Florida. The story of this charity, started by a little girl with a big heart, is so inspirational that we thought we'd share it with you here.

Twelve-year-old Mimi Ausland from Bend, Oregon wanted to help feed the hungry animals at her local animal shelter. “There are tens of thousands of dogs and cats in animal shelters across the country, all needing to be fed a good meal," said Mimi. Animal shelters work hard to see that none of their animals go hungry, but in tough economic times their donations go down dramatically. With her parents' help, Mimi launched freekibble.com on April 1, 2008. As of this writing, the charity has supplied 203,694,020 pieces of kibble for hungry dogs and cats!

In addition to providing free kibble to the Humane Society of Central Oregon, Mimi has started to reach out across the country. Freekibble.com now has 13 animal shelters on a monthly program, and hopes to add more. CANIDAE recently donated 3,000 pounds of food, which is enough to feed about 6,000 dogs for one day.

The success of Mimi's website and charity stems from how simple it is to donate. Just visit freekibble.com and answer the Bow Wow Trivia question of the day. Each day you play, no matter if your answer is right or wrong, freekibble.com is able to donate 10 more pieces of kibble to a needy shelter.

Why 10 pieces of free kibble per question?

Freekibble.com came up with the figure of 10 pieces of kibble based on their current sponsorship support and advertising on the website. The more people who play the multiple-choice trivia game each day, the more hungry dogs and cats freekibble.com can help. And, you’ll learn a lot of fun and interesting things about animals along the way!

Why only one trivia question per day?

Freekibble.com wants people to come back every day to play Bow Wow Trivia, and having only one question each day keeps it fun and interesting. Also, freekibble.com says they don’t want people to get in trouble for playing Bow Wow Trivia all day long at work.

Freekibble.com in the news

The extensive media coverage of Mimi Ausland and freekibble.com has helped this wonderful pet charity to continue to grow and help even more animals. NBC Nightly News and People Magazine have both run features on the project, and Mimi was recently a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show. Mimi received the ASPCA Kid of the Year Award last year, and was also named one of the Top 10 ‘Not So Ordinary’ Pet People by Zootoo.com, a website for pet lovers.

The publicity also helped Mimi create freekibblekat.com, a sister site dedicated to helping cats, less than a year later. Visit freekibblekat.com daily to play Meow Trivia to donate 10 pieces of kibble to kitties. Every piece of kibble counts!

Where in the world are people playing Bow Wow Trivia and Meow Trivia to help feed all those hungry dogs and cats? As of right now, in 133 countries and counting! Visit freekibble.com and freekibblekat.com for the question of the day, and you’ll help Mimi feed even more hungry shelter animals all across the country.
